Fiber isn’t boring. We just taught it wrong.

I have a biomedical sciences degree. I co-founded a gut health/functional food company. And I’ll be honest, until a few years ago, I thought fiber was kind of boring too. Turns out, I was just looking at the wrong part of the story.
When most people hear “fiber,” they picture a chalky powder and a vague promise about being more regular. Fiber has a branding problem. It got assigned to the utilitarian corner of nutrition - useful, sure, but not something you’d build a company around.
But here’s what changed my mind: I stopped thinking about fiber as a thing that moves through you, and started asking what it actually does on the way.
What fiber actually is
Fiber is a carbohydrate your small intestine can’t digest. For a long time, the scientific community treated that as a limitation. It passes through, great, moving on.
But the fact that you can’t digest it doesn’t mean nothing happens to it. About 1.5 metres into your gut, you have roughly 100 trillion microorganisms - your gut microbiome - and many of them have evolved specifically to eat the things you can’t. Fiber is their primary food source.
When bacteria ferment fiber in the colon, the byproducts like short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), are anything but boring. They regulate immune function, maintain your gut lining, modulate inflammation, and signal to your brain via the gut-brain axis. The gut isn’t just processing food. It’s communicating and defending, and fiber is the substrate that makes a lot of that possible.
The part nobody talks about: polyphenols
Fiber-rich plant foods don’t just contain fiber. They’re dense with polyphenols, plant compounds that are also largely indigestible in the small intestine, meaning they arrive at the colon intact and interact directly with the microbiome. Certain bacterial species associated with gut barrier integrity appear to thrive in the presence of specific polyphenols found in berries.
This is why the source of your fiber matters, not just the amount. You can hit 25g a day from isolated fiber and still be leaving a significant part of the picture behind.
Why we built Nordic Shape the way we did
When building Nordic Shape, we didn’t start from “what fiber should we use?” We started from the biology, what the gut microbiome actually needs, and worked backwards.
Carob (Valencia) - our extract is mostly insoluble fiber with a concentrated tannin profile. Tannins are polyphenolic compounds with documented antimicrobial selectivity in the gut, suppressing pathogenic bacteria while leaving beneficial populations intact. These compounds may support the metabolism of white fat around the abdomen.
Wild bilberry (Lapland) - exceptionally high in anthocyanins, one of the most studied polyphenol classes for prebiotic effects. Wild-harvested means higher polyphenol density than farmed equivalents.
Wild lingonberry (Lapland) - contains unique proanthocyanidins and quercetin derivatives linked to healthy microbial diversity and reduced gut inflammation markers.
Each ingredient brings something distinct. But the reason we use them together, as a whole food blend, is that synergies between different fiber types and polyphenol classes are more meaningful than any single compound in isolation.
The practical bit
Current European guidelines recommend 25g of fiber per day. The average European gets about 15–17g. That’s not a small gap.
But more useful than hitting a daily number is thinking about diversity. Different bacterial species ferment different fiber types. A monotonously high intake of one fiber source will favor a narrower microbial community than a varied one.
The analogy I keep coming back to: people who already eat plenty of food still use protein powder, because hitting a specific target from whole food alone is hard. Fiber is the same, not a replacement for a good diet but a practical way to close a real gap, and heal one of the most fundamental organs in your body.
